Show #112 Release date: 30. May, 2008

If any of you fellow Floydians or Floydettes dig Trance, Techno, Ambient House music then this podcast is right up your alley.  If you don’t like that kind of stuff, an open mind is required.

Remember Golgo Hakase?  He did a nice job with his Far East podcast… episode 109.  Check it out if you haven’t.  He sent something else along.  Golgo says “Doc, hope this doesn't get you hot.  I know Floyd fans are pretty divided on the Trance Remix thing. I've been playing around with them for a while now and I've come up with an extended 80 minute jam of what I think are the best of the remixes.  I compiled one track from almost every Floyd album that's been remixed and a few extras to boot”

Running time: 1h:50m:14s

  • Checking out Against The Grain tonight for the first time. Being a purist I can honestly say that this mix was done respectfully. I enjoy it very much. Thanks. Keep up the great work. All of you!

  • Not especially a fan of trance, though I was really looking forward to this one. After the first few tracks was pretty disappointed at too much trance and not enough Floyd. It picked up half way through and the rest was pretty good. Michael really nailed it above when he said that re-interpretation can wake one up to the art. Nice one Golgo.

  • Hey Doc and anyone else reading

Don't want to give too much away, but the remix of "If" was clever, it fitted the mood of the original. The only problem I really had with it was the irritating repetition of the first few bars of "A Pillow Of Winds", but the reinterpretation of the verse was clever (even if it was only a few lines). Personally I prefer Radiohead's brand of electronica (which isn't too far off "On The Run"), but I'm open to new things...

  • Hey Golgo and Doc, thanks for this.

As one of the former group (ie I love a lot of techno, trance, ambient) I had tried to track down some trance remixes of Floyd unsuccessfully previously, so this was really useful.

Some of it is cheesier than an explosion in a BabyBel factory, but some was really good - very much liked the more ambient remixes like A Pillow Of Winds.
Legend tells that KLF (Cauty and Drummond) did a couple of the white label album remixes - does anyone know if this is true ? Us And Them definitely sounds like The KLF Chilled/Spaced era ambient techno.

    Thanks again
    dan

  • Yuval G, Words can not express what the sissor sisters song does to me every time it is played at work, I promise if anybody ever invents a time machine I will go back it time and murder all of the sissor sisters parents when they are children.
I have not listened to this yet, to be honest all of the positive feedback has got me a litte curious, but to be honest I am a scared that this will be the first podcast I am not going to like.
I have lots of Floyd remixes and I am not the greatest fan. I'll post my thoughts when I eventually get brave enough to put it on.

  • If you are into Floyd mixes the best one I have ever heard was done by \"Mike G\" and broadcast orignally on Australian radio show Ultima Thule. It was done following Live 8, and originally broadcast as Ultima Thule show 581, Dec 12 2005. It is available as a podcast.

  • thanks Allan... I prefer this mix. isn't Ultima Thule a Swedish rock band... or latin for "ultimate north?" Fitting for a show based in the great southern land.

    Happy trials!

  • Er,not really my thing, but imagine this scenario:Out on the ale with some mates who dont understand your Floyd obsession, staggering into your local nightclub at the end of the night, and hearing these remixes belting out at major volume.Dont know about you,but it would certainly make my night!...

  • Interesting. It shows how good the music of Pink Floyd is that DJ's from all over the world want to remix it. I cant see them doing it with The Spice Girls or Britany Spears!
Did we ever find out who did the On An Island Remix from the Remember That Night DVD? That was good!

    Rock on.

  • I do enjoy a lot of remix work. I am rather ambient orientated myself, with a flavour of some good hard rhythms here and there.

some of the remixes presented here are really great, because they open up a different view on the music. I also liked eric prydz's remix btw, he is a house dj, which might come across a little too tough at times, I agree. whereas it didn't enhance the original in anyway (could this ever be done?) , I thought it was a nice sort of contemporary take on the idea of the tune, why not.

thanks golgo for putting this together, cool work. and a big thank you to you doc for keeping this thing going, it's always special!

  • Great podcast Doc.

I was really afraid to click on the link, I was really sure I\'m going to hate it.

but actually I can hear that the guys who did it really love pink floyd, and they have a lot of respect for the music (not like scissor sisters who really fucked up the song), I really enjoyed this podcast

    Thanks Doc.

  • I'm not a fan of Trance, Doc, or, in fact, of covers but Signal Hill's 'Pink Floyd Medley' (podcast # 99) convinced me to be a little less discriminating. So, as I sit here researching Infocom's text adventures (does anybody remember Floyd from 'Planetfall') sipping a Baileys & Cointreau, the 112th podcast is playing unobtrusively in the background. Familiar but different. Mellow in parts. Interesting. Thanks Doc & Golgo. Just goes to prove that good music transcends genres - maybe a orchestral podcast sometime, Doc?

  • i think I'm going to like this one
I personally dont fall into either side of the Waters/Gilmour fan farce or either side of the Floyd reworkings
personally it is good to see other artists expressing their Floydness with what they output, I've done art based on Floyd/Storm's work I wouldnt like to think that people would get so upset because I was inspired to re-do [ie copy] what I've enjoyed all my life

it's already sounding like perfect summer sunday rain music
    cheers D & G!

  • gonna give this a shot, Doc (sometimes a re-interpretation can WAKE ONE UP to the Art)....thanks for the efforts Golgo Hakase..!

  • For the curious, here\'s a link for the Ultima Thule show mentioned above. It\'s a good ambient mix, but I personally prefer a more rocking sound (obviously :). Doc, you scored again!

    Happy trials!

p.s. Hey Doc, what do you think about sharing \"space\" with Pat Condell ? He _totally_ cracks me up!
