Show #79 Release date: 2. March, 2007

Here is something I've wanted to get to for a real long time.  The Final Cut demos.

This is most likely from a production demo reel that somehow got leaked.  This particular recording came from a high generation cassette tape out of Argentina about twenty years ago.  You can imagine how poor the sound quality will be.  Fortunately with today's technology I was able to fix it up some as best I could.

Just as I finished getting everything together for this podcast something had occurred to me, the month of November appears a lot.  Every live cut in this edition was performed in November.  In The Gunner's Dream, Roger mentions the cold November air.

  • remember, remember the 5th of November: (sense of humour required)

Remember, remember the fifth of November,
    The gunpowder, treason, and plot,
I know of no reason why the gunpowder treason
    Should ever be forgot.
Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, \'twas his intent
To blow up the King and Parliament.
Three score barrels of powder below,
    Poor old England to overthrow;
By God\'s providence he was catch\'d
With a dark lantern and burning match.
Holloa boys, holloa boys, make the bells ring.
Holloa boys, holloa boys, God save the King!
    Hip hip hoorah!

A penny loaf to feed the Pope.
A farthing o\' cheese to choke him.
A pint of beer to rinse it down.
A faggot of sticks to burn him.
Burn him in a tub of tar.
Burn him like a blazing star.
Burn his body from his head.
Then we\'ll say ol\' Pope is dead.
    Hip hip hoorah!
    Hip hip hoorah hoorah!

    cant beat burning catholics?
(well not anymore, catholics are humans too)
along with the change in the weather that lets you know winter is finally here
a month for the meloncholly man

  • Hey Matt, nice show, I enjoyed what I heard and, even with the sound problems, you did a great job, it came across well. Thanks for your shows. I am looking forward to the next one.

  • A request -- is there any way you could dig up something with the original version of \"Eclipse\"? The most common bootleg from that short period -- the original Dark Side in Brighton -- has a power outage in \"Money\" and the band doesn\'t continue the suite (it goes into an ass-kicking version of \"Atom Heart Mother,\" so I shouldn\'t bitch). The version on the record was in the setlist by the Rainbow Theater show a month later.

  • Wow, they really did change quite profoundly after 'Animals' . 'The Final Cut''s the last decent piece of work that Waters put his name to, IMHO - some superb lyrics, and way better as a whole than the meandering and often infantile 'Props and Cons'. It's very accomplished for a demo, only the synthy drums and missing (excellent) sax give it away.

And that version of 'Cymbaline' was gearing up to be a classic until it sounded like the Floyd were struck by lightning.

  • We have had several airings of Shine on from Empire Pool, November \'74, and one airing of Raving and Drooling. Can I request the missing track from the first half, \"You Gotta Be Crazy\"? I have a recording of the whole show, but it\'s from some years back and of poor quality by your standards Doc.

Great to hear the Final Cut demos. Some interesting stuff. I\'d also back up anyone requesting further Wall demos. I\'d like to hear everything that\'s out there, from Roger\'s demo right through the two or three production demos. Whatever is in existence.

    Keep \'em coming

  • Awesome podcast as usual, Doc. This is a huge treasure trove of great music, something that is very hard to come by these days... Brain Damage has become my primary source of new music in general!
    Thanks, doc.

(Also, if there's an equivalent podcast for The Who, I'd very much like to know about it.)

  • What I\'ve always wondered is if Roger\'s Wall demos are out there somewhere. I\'ve heard the band demos. Heard them right here, in fact! (\'Listen, I am a physician...\')

And I\'ve heard the live rehearsals (\'Stop building the wall. Please. Thank you.\')

But what about the demo Roger played for the band when he also played them \'Pros and Cons\'? Do you have it or has ANYONE ever heard it, Doc?

  • Thanks for playing my request, man. I believe this is the first time a DJ has actually responded to a request I've made. But I guess no other DJ's are The Doctor. Usually they're those lame pop DJ's that just play their Britney Spears and Blink 182 shit all day. Haha, anyway, thanks again.

  • Love you site, and have been listening for some time. Finally got an iPod, so I\'d love to build a collection for playback when I want. I have one suggestion, though. Could you post the file size next to the download link?
Thanks for your hard work and kudos to scoring Bill St. James for the intro!
