- I never liked Atom Heart Mother (the track I mean, not the album as such - Summer 68 and Fat Old Sun are both brilliant). It wasn't till a several years ago when my brother - who got into Floyd via me - would rave about Atom Heart Mother, and I'd go "Eh??" It really just meandered around and never went anywhere.
I eventually went back and listened to it again when I copied it from vinyl to CD and ended up appreciating it a lot more. And the appreciation has gradually increased since. I think it's probably still among the Floyd's weakest works, but it's still a very interesting piece, and this performance only increases my appreciation further. Cheers. - First time leaving a message here, Doc. I've gotta say, thank you so much for this podcast. It's the only one I religiously listen to, and has even inspired me to start my own (I can provide you a link if you so wish, not in any way Floyd related).
However, I do have a request. Odds are, no bootleg audio exists from the Games for May concert the Syd-era Pink Floyd held in 1967. However, I would like to see that recreated to the best of your ability with whatever live or studio cuts are available to you. I've always wondered what it would've been like.
In any case, great job, thank you for it all, and I can't wait to hear the next one.
Evan - If only Roger and/or David would do a Animals tour, DSOTM was awesome for David on PULSE and Roger last year... ya know what would be cool Doc? A mix of those two performances of DSOTM where each respected singer is singing the proper parts... Just blend back in forth on some tracks where Dave and Rog sing, but try and create what a true PF concert of DSOTM would sound like, with Gilmores solos, Rog/Dave/Rick's Vocals... that'd be killer. But even better would be Animals. That is by far my favorite album (followed by the Final Cut, the Wall, DSOTM, Obscured by Clouds, Meddle, Atom Heart Mother, WYWH, Pipers, Ummagumma, etc). I love all the various versions of Raving and Drooling/You Got To Be Crazy you have on here. Truly amazing. And some of the Animals era concerts are awesome, but I'd pay anything to see Rog or Dave or both do a tour of that album. Does Roger have rights to that album (Animals) like he does material on The Wall and the Final Cut (or does Dave just hate The Final Cut and purposefully never play anything from that album...)? I have heard Dave couldn't use the floating pig, so he added Testicles to it so it'd be different. If they did do a combined concert of Animals, they could use both, or heck, add a third one for use during Pigs (Three Different Ones). That'd be killer. But in all honesty, I think we'd see another Wall tour before we'd see Animals. Especially if there is a reunion. Rog's Berlin DVD is killer, but to hear the songs with Dave on guitar would be even better... and you know how he likes to solo on Comfortably Numb until pigs fly... well... I think the pigs usually fly during Sheep. :P. I think one area of issue though would be Dave would want to play Learning To Fly and other post Waters tracks that Dave thinks rock, while Rog would want to stick to their 70s material + The Wall. Perhaps they could come to an agreement, Like Do the wall for the main show, but then finish the second set with The Tide Is Turning, and include maybe The Final Cut or the Fletcher Memorial Home in exchange for Dave playing Learning to Fly, Breathe, Wish You Were Here, maybe Fearless, and something else in the encore...
I'd easily pay 120 dollars a seat to see Dave playing on top of the Wall, and Roger in his Doctor's jacket... And if some of the Final Cut elements that originated during the writing of the wall were-reincluded... I think I'd pass out from orgasmic bliss/euphoria. That also would be a cool podcast Doc. To reinclude elements or songs from The Final Cut into the Wall... like some elements are easy to correlate. Like the Gunners Dream and South Hampton Docks would be near When the Tigers Broke Free, or One of the Few perhaps before The Happiest Days of Our Lives, The Final Cut after the Wall is torn down, Your Possible Pasts between Waiting for the Worms and Stop (like in the film)... Just some ideas... I think that'd be killer.
:D
Thanks for all the awesome podcasts Doc!
All my coworkers keep wondering why they keep hearing, "Medication Time..." coming from my office. LOL! - Doc,
Wonderful is an understatement, thank you so much.Atom Heart Mother is part of my musical upbringing.I was at Bath Festival 1970 and saw them perform this with absolutely no prior warning. It was the most amazing musical experience EVER!!!! They came on in the early hours of the morning, the rolling English countryside around us and performed this amazing piece. - Mike, that is SERIOUSLY funny mate, nice one! When I met Nick I was only just getting into Floyd and was MAD on TFC so I said to him "wow man, the final cut is bloody awesome" and to say he looked suprised was an understatement. Then a few years later when I was aware of all the story and stuff I felt quite proud I said that ;-) It is a superb album though, I can be in tears within 3 minutes, guaranteed, every time.
- Greetings Doc and everyone from London.
I was there - it was very special. I was 10 rows right in front of David so I could see the chords he was playing - for a (not very good) guitarist that was a total thrill, trying to study his technique. Anyway to answer the question about was it all Davids guitar work - well they did share it, but ALL the solos were Davids. As far as I could see the other guy stepped back and mainly stayed on the chords rather than any soloing. It was David totally on the slide guitar. Ron Geesin was surprisingly entertaining - a true English excentric.
Thanks Doc for all the good work.
StuArt - Wow, very cool Doc, nice surprise. Hey Mike (Caddick), for what it\'s worth I shared an elevator with Dave in Hartford back in the late 80\'s, I didn\'t really say much, just nice show and all (was to blown away to be on the ride with him)... grabbed his signature on Sheraton stationary with no issue (still have it)... Maybe he was friendlier then, still competing with Roger for the lime light? Anyway, he was cool for me!
- Awesome, Marc. Thanks!
So now, come the end of this decade, David Gilmour will be able to say he performed in not one, but TWO of the ten most unlikely performances to ever happen this side of the millennium. (So far, Led Zeppelin and Brian Wilson have each only made the list once.) As if he didn't have enough to go down in history for already. :) - Wow!This one popped up all over the Floyd community pretty damn fast.Much Thanks to tapers and trade groups and the one and only Doc for sharing this with us all.Two thoughts;
What a wasted opportunity for a reunion!I know it was Ron Geesins gig,but another small but historic excuse for the four guys to get together to just play the music,(i.e without the pressure of doing a new album with all the tensions that would cause),and at a low key event (i.e without lots of media coverage and speculation),like the Syd tribute, has not been taken up.I reckon, these two events might, ironically, have helped to lead to a re-union.Just do it for fun guys.Play some blues covers in a pub under a different name.Just make sure somebody tapes it.
The other thing is Grumpy Gilmour.I've heard this before of Dave...id and I think it's a shame he can't spare a few moments to give his fans what would be a special memory in their lives, and ends up pi***ng them off.
Nice 'cast though Doc.Atom Heart Mother(Storm,Son Of Thorg Mix)is going on my next Gospel According To The Doctor:The Best Of Brain Damage mp3 disc for the car. - What an Amazing Pudding! Refreshed your page & couldn't believe there was a new offering so soon - and AHM to boot! Floyd & Geesin always wanted to re-record this as they weren't happy with the original. And here it is, 38 years later. Wonderfully stirring stuff. Many thanks to all concerned.
- It was indeed a great evening. Very small, posh, venue and a good sound in there. I did infact stumble upon Dave (or David as he now likes to be called, quote from Mr. Geesin) one hour before doors opened. He was coming out of the venue and getting into his trailer van. Someone was there with a book for him to sign and as I went round the corner of his van I heard 'I dont DO autographs' as he was getting into his trailer. I thought, oh ok, I'm not wanting one anyway and just said 'Hi Dave' and offered my hand to which he looked at me as if I were scum of the earth and had an expression of 'why the hell would I shake YOUR hand' on his face. I love his guitaring as much as the next man but trust me folks, he's stuck up, grumpy, full of himself, git. Nick was civil when I met him and Storm was wonderful. Luckily I'm more of a Roger fan and don't own any DG solo material (and never listen to AMLoR or DB) but if I did and was a Gilmour devotee I'd of been seriously upset about that. Still, I've had a Gilmour moment, which will do me. Anyway, good work Doc, getting this up so quick for all the people who couldn't of gone.
- what a way to start a show!
this is why you are great there Doc
thought I would never get to hear this
it really is a once in a lifetime experience
hopefully David Gilmour Roger Waters will see that doing reworks of the classics is a viable and definitely wanted experience
hope there's going to be another show along the same lines by any of the members!
fantastic Doc!!! - So is it safe to assume we're hearing David throughout and not the ensemble's usual guitarist? I'd love to see pictures from this.
Also, I hear this was a two-night event and DG was only at one of the two... I almost feel bad for people who could only see the other show.
Almost. ;)
