Show #155, Release date: 16. August, 2010

This podcast is a huge improvement to Show #56 - It took forever to do this.  Honestly I'm glad its done but I'm so enjoying the rewards of having a killer sounding recording and now you can too. This one is made up of two sources painstakingly mixed together.  You really get a feel for the space.

The Boston Garden was a great place to see a concert.  It was built at the cost of 4 million dollars in 1928 by the same people who built New York's Madison Square Garden.  It was originally called  Boston's Madison Square Garden and eventually "Madison Square" was dropped from the name.  The Garden was demolished in 1997.

The Floyd live at The Garden, 18. June, 1975.  Most enjoyable are the performances of You Gotta Be Crazy, which is different from both the 74 and 77 Dogs versions.  The set also has great versions of Any Colour You Like and one of the last pre-87 performances of Echoes.

Before that, I have for you, audio of the video footage from the Hoping Foundation gig featuring David Gilmour and Roger Waters.  Please, if you can, give to the HOPING Foundation!

  • I just worked my way through my backlog of podcasts I have waiting to listen to, and this is a work that defies labeling. This can be said to be the best I have heard and DAMN, you should be proud of your work here. Many, many, uncountable thanks for your work here. You set the standard, man.

    Best Regards.

  • after watching several shows on video...& listening to those Doc has turned into a podcast...(and with my Atlanta tickets proudly in habd) I'm trying to remembe rif there has ever been a Rock album more overtly 'political' than THE WALL...whcih poetically & theatrically expresses Waters DEEPly held views.

    Andwer: NOPE.

  • Hey Doc, you really knocked it out of the park with this one!

I really hope that we can keep the listenership focused on the music and away from politics. While I disagree with most of Roger's political views (especially post Floyd, when the lyrics become more specific) and obviously Mike's, I still respect those with differing opinions and seek refuge from the storm in the beauty of the art.

  • Many thanks Doc a great 'real' sound. You must be such a critical listener whilst recreating the feel of a show can you still get pleasure from the finished article or do you need to rest it before listening for pleasure?

    .@ A Listener,
Many of us appreciate not only Roger's music and theatrics but also the poetic and politics insights of his Lyrics.( the thing that kept most of Floyd's music off the radio and inaccessible to the thoughtless ).

I am Excited to see Roger and Specifically PROUD to be in SOLIDARITY with him on the plight of the Palestinian People, Oppressed by an occupying Army, which the UN has for decades said must leave (this is the same UN whose Demands about Saddam Hussein the US said were BINDING). Roger's stance against War in general was one reason I appreciated his historic work.
And, I am pleased and PROUD to join His call to "FREE GAZA" ....(which has NEVER been 'disguised" in any way).

  • Proud to support BOTH Roger Water's tour and VERY PROUD to support Roger's honorable SOLIDARITY the oppressed people in the illegally occupied land of Palestine (that this occupation IS illegal is the ruling of the UN..remember them, they're the folks whose opinion of Saddam Hussein the US said was BINDING and IMPORTANT).

The Occupation IS a one-sided CRIME.....again, ask the UN.

Here is a fairly typical example of the Crimes Against Humanity that Roger Waters and David Gilmour would like to see stop: ( this article is about the acquittal of an Israeli Captain who fired 17 rounds from his rifle into a 13 year old Palestinian girl who had been described to him by the Watch Officer in a tower as "a little girl scared to death, moving away.."

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2005/nov/16/israel2

When the IDF attacked the Gazans in Dec 2008 - Jan 2009, 1417 Palestinians were killed, more than 1/3 of them children. 13 IDF soldiers were killed. See the disproportionate force....????

MORE than half the population of Gaza is UNDER 15 years of age......seems The Occupation doesn't bode well for Palestinian longevity.

  • I'm wondering, has anyone else had the intestinal fortitude (read integrity!) to decide to forego the upcoming Roger Waters' tour? Like everyone else, I was enthused to attend a performance of "The Wall," but was literally nauseated to hear that Rog is mounting this show solely (besides making money) to make daft political statements. Look, the children in the Palestinian territories are victims, but the one-sided finger-pointing has to stop! His comments on his Facebook page have led me to sell his tickets AT COST. I would recommend this course of action to those who, like me, do not want to turn up for a "Free Gaza" rally in the disguise of a rock concert.

  • What an amazing sounding show this is..Doc, your Hollywood Bowl 72' Matrix has always been a favourite show of mine, but this one far exceeds expectations, the best sounding gig from 75' i've heard yet.. Maybe this will inspire you to try to complete the 88' Foxboro Matrix you were working on again?? Doc, are the 2 sources used here different from the source used in show 56?..

  • Well...
I've listened through to this material several times and compared it to earlier versions. Indeed, the sound is "opened up" and with good headphones ( a Pink Floyd must) and plenty of volume it really does put you in a seat at the show. I even love the chatter. I attribute the drop-out of guitar on Echoes to the " azimuth coordinator" effect as it shows up on other shows. Playing with my GarageBand program I understand the problem of synching non corresponding tracks so I humbly bow to your persistence and patience. Must have been exhausting. I'm guessing this new version will be the standard and sincerely hope the opportunity for other matrix projects arises and you perform the same yeomanlike public service. Pats on the back!
My only sorrow is that I was not sufficiently into the Floyd in '75 to have seen them at their pinnacle, but I have this recording to imagine I did. Thanks!

  • Two ideas:

    1) Is it possible to do a matrix this to other shows?

    2) Have you ever thought of dedicating a podcast to a couple of songs? Say, track some of the different ways Pink Floyd played "Money" or "Careful with That Axe, Eugene," so we can hear it change over the years.

  • Doc-

GREAT job on the Matrix, I have listened several times on headphones, we now have a definitive recording from '75. Thanks for all you do, I know its a labor of love, but it IS work, and we do appreciate it. I will be at Roger Waters in Boston 10/1/10. Hope to see you there!

  • Doc, I have been listening to every podcast going on three years now, and have listened to the whole back catalog. This is by far my favorite show. The work you have done is incredible, and yes, please put a FLAC up on Yeeshkul or somewhere of this and let us know when it is up.

Thanks for the hard work, and I hope you continue doing other matrix versions. This one goes right next to my Oakland Animals show as good enough to be an official release.

    Cheers,

Greatly appreciated! This will be a pod that I'll most surely come back to.

Any plans of releasing your work as a "standard" roio as well? If you decide to do that I'm sure that it will be much appreciated from the community.

The last time I listened to something Floyd with tears in my eyes was when I heard the Zabriskie outtake The Red Queen for the first time. That was a couple of years ago. Now you made me cry again. Words can't tell how grateful I am to you for this fantastic piece.

  • Doc, I've gotta echo the comments above about both these shows. Your cleanup of the HF audio is GREATLY appreciated. The raw files available were a little too rough, but you've made them sound fantastic!

As for Boston, well, I can tell your heart was fully in this project. Excellent job! But a selfish request too, are you planning to release this awesome matrix in FLAC or any other lossless format? As good as this show sounds, I would LOVE to hear it as such. I can think of a number of sites out there that would gladly host the lossless files for distribution. Please give it some thought, OK?

All the best and looking forward to your next podcast already!

  • Hi Doc!
What a great work of yours. thank you again. here is something Roger posted on his The Wall Facebook site about the Gig and the first number. thought it would be nice to read:

"...he (Dave) made one final entreaty. I quote "If you do 'To Know Him Is To Love Him' for The Hoping Foundation Gig, I'll come and do 'C. Numb' on one of your Wall shows". Well! You could have knocked me down with a feather. How fucking cool! I was blown away. How could I refuse such an offer. I couldn't, there was no way. Generosity trumped fear. And so explaining that I would probably be shite, but if he didn't mind I didn't, I agreed and the rest is history. We did it, and it was fucking great. End of story. Or possibly beginning. Roger"

  • Awesome podcast Doc. Thanks you so much. I'm in tears listening to the Hoping Foundation songs. It is something I thought I would never hear again - the sounf of a hatchet being buried as Waters and Gilmour sing together. Shame half the audience didn't seem to realise just what they were chatting over!

The 75 show is just the business. It's amazing when you listen back to the doctored 'You Gotta Be Crazy' and 'Raving and Drooling' and realise just how poor the lyrics were.

As someone said above, the Floyd were on fire that night. SOYCD 6-9 is breathtaking.

Thanks again for your dedication to the Floyd, and for another in a long, long line of fantastic broadcasts.

I first got a tape of the Hopkins recording in 1987; the progression from that version to this one is -- well, almost as good as the improvement from my old "Live 67-69" tape (also c.1987) and the new HRV you played in BD150. Cheers to all of you who meticulously seek out the low-gens, clean up, tweak, and otherwise curate Floyd History for all our enjoyment. Now if only someone can get their hands on the whole of that Champs-Elysees 1/23/70 radio broadcast...

thanks for the hoping audio, too. I was watching the performance this morning, david's and roger's interaction during "to know is to love him" is so hilarious and heartwarming. roger mentions it being work in progress, now whatever one wants to read into that. both of them collaborating on some future material, maybe even with nick, but not as pink floyd is something that would put a smile on rick's face for sure.

great david and roger support the hoping foundation's goal and, we all should, too....
