Show #105 Release date: 22. February, 2008

On the 23rd of May 1968, Pink Floyd performed three shows in one evening.  One gig was just outside Amsterdam but the other two were at Paradiso.

The venue was once an old church and has high ceilings and a balcony overlooking the stage area.  Imagine how cool it must have been watching Floyd perform A Saucerful of Secrets with three large illuminated stained glass windows above the stage.

These two gigs took place within the first six months of Paradiso’s opening as a publicly-subsidized youth entertainment center.  It was also one of the first locations in which the use and sale of soft drugs was tolerated, so space out and enjoy.

Show One
1. Let There Be More Light
2. Interstellar Overdrive
3. Set The Controls for The Heart of The Sun
4. A Saucerful of Secrets

Show Two
1. Keep Smiling People
2. Let There Be More Light
3. Set The Controls for The Heart of The Sun
4. Flaming
5. A Saucerful of Secrets

Running time: 1h:56m:40s

  • F i n a l l y ! ! !

I finished listening to your excellent flashback / Deja Vu podcast episode - Thanks Doc. As a 4-time visitor to the Dutch Haven of Amsterdam, I sure appreciate these kinds of musical "nugs" to remind me of my daze in one of the coolest places in the world: (For those who know, you know...)

-> "Barney's" for the best "Dam" Psychedelic Breakfast!
    -> "De Dampkring"
-> "Greenhouse Effect" - then over to "Hill Street Blues" to hang out
-> "Home Growers Fantasy" - dude, that pisser is one you'll never forget!
    -> "BlueBird" (upstairs!)
-> "Pink Floyd" has a VERY cool mural and worth seeing, but somehow high energy techno music is like fingernails on a blackboard in there (had to leave that place!)
and, of course, "Grey Area" :-)-~ ~ ~

  • I would also enjoy hearing a full barrett show.

  • As you may well know, my standards regarding sound quality is very high. The quality of most if not all early Pink Floyd concert recordings available (and theres not many) from the Barrett era are absolutely abysmal unfortunately and beyond repair. The Barrett era material that is listenable has already been featured several times in other podcasts and I'll will continue to do so from time to time.

  • A nice early recording. Keep Smiling People is a cool early version of Careful With That Axe Eugene :-)

Keep the good work up doc

Yes, I did a lot of tweaking and I did get some good material from Maff. Thanks for listening.

    Best,

  • Good show. I have a copy of the second show, but it sounds like hell. Did you do some tweaking on the sound?

Unrelated question: Did you get any good shows from that fellow who let you copy his collection after the Yeeshukul debacle?

  • these shows went down well for me Doc.

    That intro is kool..

...also enjoyed the second, semi-aborted ('just kidding') intro....

  • the beginning clip is from the "reality" tv show, "My Fair Brady" Episode 4 Father Knows Best. Right at the end of the episode...

The guy is Chris Knight and the chick (who's completely wasted in that clip) is Adrianne Curry.

    Thanks to the guys in
    Gilmour's Breakfast
for alerting me to that gem.

  • Hi doc! Great podcast! Was also wondering where the beginning clip was from though..? Any chance of Roger Waters Hyde park, London show from 2006 in a future show.....? Or how about the Doc's personal top 20 floyd tracks...would love to hear that!!! Take it easy.

  • Great stuff as usual Doc,good to hear a couple of shows from 1968.Any chance of going back a few months and hearing a complete Barret era show?I know there rare, but im sure youve got one good enough to share with us?!

  • I don't think a Barrett era podcast would be bad either. I know the sound quality of the two available shows are bloody rough, but I think that we all love Syd enough that we could see beyond that :) Plus, I'd love to hear them Doctored up for super sound!

  • Very nice, Doc! I've always wanted to hear these shows, but I've never had a chance. Hey, I've got two rather rare 1968 shows (one from a Halloween TV show, and the other a 2 song "Interstellar Overdrive"/"A Saucerful of Secrets" complete show from L.A.) If you'd like to get a hold of them, drop me an e-mail.
