Show #93 - Release date: 31. August, 2007

I can’t believe it’s already the “end? of summer here in Boston.  Time flies.  The concert featured in the last podcast was roughly around Pink Floyd’s 20th birthday.  I remember 1987 like it was only yesterday.  Here we are, 20 years, staring down the barrel of Pink Floyds 40th anniversary release of their first album The Piper At The Gates of Dawn.  Actually it was on 5th of August but for this podcast we’re marking the 40th anniversary re-release.  The ‘cast is shorter than usual but it’s jam packed with many early gems and you can even fit this one on a CDR.  Hope you dig.

  • For some reason it stopped halfway through the podcast! It might've been a download error, so I'm going to try to re-download it.

  • This time I'm forcing myself not to hit the "submit comment" button until it's done playing so I can make running notes.

2 & 3: Candy sounds positively "produced" after hearing that demo! Maybe that's what it sounded like to ordinary people back then.

4: Fake stereo... what is that, just the mono mix run through ADT?

7 & 8: One hallmark of a 1960s recording: auxillary percussion (tambourine in this case) being ear-piercingly shrill relative to the mix. Beatles songs often suffered from this too.

9: Paintbox is underrated and nicely produced for its time. When I first heard that on Relics, you could have told me it was Meddle-era and I would have belived it.

10 & 11: Curse them all for not officially releasing these!

13: This was a single version?? I have that version on a RoIO and I always assumed it was a BBC version, because it's lumped in with other BBC stuff.

15: Whatever this is, awesome! The payoff of the podcast!

16: So terribly loud. I just can't bear it. ;)

17: Cool, that goes on past where the version I have fades out.

Easter egg: Syd saying "hello? oh, hello." -- OMG that foreshadows Comfortably Numb! Well, not really. What's that from?

  • Well, we\'re lucky, cos it\'s the start of Spring in NZ. Woop.

Thank goodness for Wikipedia, directing me towards your fabulous podcasts. I\'ve always wanted to hear Nick\'s Boogie, but haven\'t been able to find it anywhere...

  • "Why does it got to be so loud? For me it's too loud." :)
