Show #103 Release date: 25. January, 2008

The Complexity of staging The Wall live meant that Pink Floyd could not take it on the road, as they had done with live performances of their previous albums.  Instead, The Wall had to be set up days in advance at a select arena, performed for a series of shows, and then dismantled over the course of a couple of days.  As a result, The Wall was performed in only two venues in the United States, and two more in Europe, for a total of just 31 shows.*  This show is the third of six at Earls Court, 6th August, 1980.

  1. Announcements
  2. In the Flesh?

3. The Thin Ice
  4. Another Brick in the Wall (part 1)

  • I once read a humorous date-by-date transcription of every RLH intro, as they evolved in a hilarious and somewhat psychotic way. I'd like to hear them one after another...

  • Maybe the DSotM idea would work if, instead of going by year/tour, you built it up from 1972 concerts as it developed. Anything after that wasn't really "honing" anything, it was beating a dead horse... :)

  • Is "What Shall We Do Now" a part of "Empty Spaces" now? I thought it was two seperate songs, or that "Empty..." was a part of "Waht..."

  • Hey doc,this maybe be a few weeks late but someone asked from an earlier podcast if there were any soundboards from 1977,I have and LP with a complete soundboard of WYWH performed live on that tour (I believe it was from New York) Do you know anything about this? Is the rest of the concert available?

  • Scott, Doc;
    I believe the cd version of this concert is known as Welcome To The Machine - it has a very good sound, with one or two minor edits/jumps. For information about various roio's, this can be a useful site - but it's no longer updated .

  • Doc, thanks.
    I'm more than happy to bow to your greater understanding of your audience and subject ... I'm just happy to listen and enjoy your offerings. Keep them coming - no pressure, mind you.

  • Hey Warwick,
    I do plan on including the Wellington NZ based "Pink Floyd Experience"... there is also another tribute band from California with the same name. Oh and the first option (idea) is more of a "through the years" concert progression... not really a song development progression.
    that might get a little too redundant.

  • Please consider including the Wellington NZ based 'Pink Floyd Experience' http://www.pinkfloydexperience.co.nz if you're putting together another Tribute podcast - there are downloads available on their site. I've been attending their gigs since they started - suffice to say the concerts have just been getting bigger and bigger. Almost as good as the real thing.

    I like your first option for a podcast - the final version of Floyd's music could differ quite markedly as they honed the songs. Look forward to hearing your selection.

  • Was very pleasantly suprised this wasn't the box set "Is There Anybody Out There" gig. Excellent. That means I've got two Earl's Court Wall gigs! Superb, but if you want a "The Wall" experience - the studio album is easily king of the hill. Thanks for posting. Floyd on shuffle! Don't think so. Themed and rare stuff must be the best idea, but it seems a popular idea. Perhaps a poll?

  • oh well, what the hell... heres some things I'm thinking for up coming podcasts... these are just rough ideas;
    1. a podcast featuring a progression of Floyd honing their craft live by year/tour.
    2. Dark Side of The Moon done the same way as above. I already mapped this one out. unfortunately its not possible. Solo tours don't count.
    1972 - speak to me/breathe
    1973 - on the run
    1974 - time/breathe (re)
    1975 - great gig in the aky
    1977 - money
    and thats it... you can figure out the rest... see what I mean?
    3. A REALLY nice Wall gig from New York.
    4. Tribute bands (if you're in one, now would be a good time to hit me up)
    5. A recently surfaced Foxboro gig from 1988 mentioned in Nick's book.

    Over and out...

  • I rarely listen to the Wall these days simply because I over listened to it when I first started my Floyd obsession......Shame.
    Its a good job your here doc to sort it out.
    I have a request, my place of work has started to play the sissor sisters cover of comfortably numb, please never ever ever play it in any tribute or for any reason at all, I can't express in words how I feel when I hear it but I would like to invent a time machine and make sure it never was made it needs deleting from history.
    sorry for the rant,
    and I agree with Sam turn on the shuffle.
    thanx Doc
