Show #96, Release date: 13. October, 2007

It wasn’t too often other musicians were given the opportunity to jam with Pink Floyd let alone be able to jam with Pink Floyd.

“Frank Zappa is really one of those rare musicians that can play with us. The little he did in Amougies was terribly correct. But he's the exception. Our music and the way we behave on stage, makes it very hard to improvise with us.?
- Nick Mason (commenting on playing with other musicians)

The two progressive rock planets collided on the 25th of October, 1969 at The Actuel Festival in Amougies, Belgium.  Recently, in the last year an audience recording finally surfaced.  Its not the best recording but its all we got.

1. Astronomy Domine
2. Green Is The Colour
3. Careful With That Axe, Eugene
4. Interstellar Overdrive (with Frank Zappa)
5. Set The Controls For The Heart of The Sun (filmed outtake version)
6. A Saucerful of Secrets
7. Green Is The Colour (soundboard/soundtrack)
8. Careful With That Axe Eugene (soundboard/soundtrack)
9. Set The Controls For The Heart of The Sun (soundboard/soundtrack)

  • not sure if this is a stupid question - what is the last song on this podcast? Who\'s playing?

  • this is true doc

I was thinking about trying it for a car cd, see how it sounded
fortunately the "apple lossless" setting for burning cd's works on the car and makes everything sound better
[will let you know if the two work out ok]

  • Hi Dognamedblue,
If people converted the kbps setting, it would decrease the size of the casts but it would also dramatically decrease the quality of the the cast as well. I\'d strongly advise against doing so.

  • Hey Doc

bit late in getting the new podcasts
but a bit of zappa & floyd can only be good :)

    re: podcast size
would people converting the kbps setting (the quality) decrease the audio size of the casts?
    if that makes sense
most audio cd's as folks know will cope with about 75mins max of audio but the casts last for a very pleasant couple of hours

  • Hi Kees,
I know why... and I would really appreciate it if people NOT cut up my podcasts. It's a little insulting to the whole creative process, especially after all the hard work I put into them.

If its any consolation, I'm always open to suggestions and requests. If you would like CD length podcasts from time to time, just give the word.

  • Doc, thanks for all the beautiful podcasts.

I have a question: i can not split this one and the previous podcast (with the program Slice) to make it suitable for a putting on a cd.
Does anybody knows the reason ?

  • Wow, this one's a gem, and the sound's really not that bad. The Zappa 'Overdrive' is much slower (esp when compared to 'Tonite Let's Make Love In London'), but suitably out there.

But what's going on at the start of 'Set The Controls'? It sounds like Roger is talking to the sound engineer, asking for 'more treble', etc. Thing is, you can hear him singing at the same time.

  • I have been with you since the beginning, and I wanted to say thanks………..you are very much appreciated, even if we don’t tell you often.

Keep up the great work, cbe

  • The surprise track at the end gave me shivers. This past summer I was watching a lot of Zappa\'s TV appearances on YouTube, and it struck me how bad his \"television presence\" was (mostly interviews during the height of the PMRC and \"porn wars\"); I can imagine that a lot of people who watched those came away with the impression that he was kind of a jerk. But he was just a person who loved music, and adored other people who loved music, and he probably felt that to act superficially friendly with clueless TV hosts and audience members would have been kind of an insult to the people he truly admired, including the many great musicians he worked with.

  • Pink Floyd played \"Interstellar Overdrive\" into October 1970.

A request, if someone can -- the song the band played to end Dark Side before Roger wrote \"Eclipse.\" I\'ve never heard it, and in the most common recording from this era, the Brighton show, the band stops Dark Side in the middle of \"Money.\"
