Show #84 Release date: 11. May, 2007

Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking was Waters' first solo project and tour. Original demos were done at the same time as The Wall demos were made and when presented to the band the others rejected Pros And Cons in favor of The Wall.  Its about a series of dreams about a guy dealing with a mid-life crisis in a motel room.  Sound familiar?  We go back to 22. July 1984 at The Meadowlands Arena in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Before we dive into Pros And Cons, we start this podcast off with three tracks from the "Syd" Barrett, Madcap's Last Laugh tribute show last night (10. May 2007) at London's Barbican Centre.  Roger Waters performs Flickering Flame.  David Gilmour, Richard Wright and Nick Mason perform Arnold Layne. We'll also hear all the artists (except Roger Waters) cap off the evening with Bike.  Remember, you heard it here first.

  • post script: I believe Tim Renwick was the back up guitarist on this tour. Also, I'm pretty sure that I have read Clapton was miserable on this tour, and that afterward he swore he'd never tour as another artist's guitarist again. I'm not sure whether he's upheld that declaration.

  • This one clears some cobwebs. I was at this show, and it was a good one. I always thought the sound was good at the indoor Meadowlands. Anyway, I can\'t believe this was 23 years ago. Just blows the mind how quickly time flies.

  • PFFan - Podcast #58 showcases a live show from Rog's 1999 tour, featuring the tracks you detailed.

Doc - any chance of a full show from the KAOS tour sometime?

  • Wow that was refreshing. My friends and I saw Waters play to a half-empty Philadelphia Spectrum that same tour. We were blown away by both the state-of-the-art multimedia backdrop and Roger's updated arrangements of the Floyd pices. (I think we had just seen the re-formed 3-member Floyd and were disappointed that they sounded like the same-old same-old.) Roger's pacifism was on full display, yet it wasn't partisan as it is now.
I agree with the other comment that Clapton's playing was lukewarm. Clapton contributed a journeyman performance. Remember that this was during a deep lull in his own career; my pals and I had written him off as a has-been rocker. We were not excited about him being part of this tour. (Yikes, were we ever wrong. His eventual comeback was amazing!)

  • WOW, what a coencident....the last week I have listened to some old Roger tour\\\'s ( 1984/1999 ) and I am now really in the mood for another Pro\\\'s and Con\\\'s bootleg :D

Just yesterday I have listened to the Pros and Cons show from July 21st 1984. That\\\'s just the day before this one...So I am excited to hear this one too :P

After seeing Roger\\\'s DSOTM tour 4 times, I much liked the setlist of the \\\'99/2000 tour. Maybe you could make a podcast of that tour some day? I mean The Thin Ice , 5:06 A.M. (Every Stranger\\\'s Eyes) ,The Powers That Be , What God Wants, Part 1 ,It\\\'s A Miracle , Amused to Death ...just wonderfull songs wich he unfortunatly hasn\\\'t performed on his 2006/2007 tour :(

Thanks again and keep up the good work :D

    p.s. I love Clapton's guitar on Pros and Con's songs 8)

  • It was bizarre listening to Clapton do the old Floyd tracks. Not sure if I liked them.

  • Awesome! I\'ve been dying to hear a live Pros & Cons show for a long time. The Syd tribute show is a nice surprise too, although I\'m really disappointed that the band refused to reunite for the show. I\'m not sure that I agree with your theory that it would take attention away from the Syd tribute. I\'m a die-hard Roger fan and have defended his actions in the past, but I think this seems like kind of a dick move. These guys are in their 60s, I really wish they would stop bickering like children already. It\'s looking less and less likely that Floyd fans will finally get what they want in terms of a reunion (Live 8 was nice, but it was really just a cocktease when you think about it). Oh well. Great podcast.

  • Very nice. But I'm more interested in the Syd Barrett Tribute Evening stuff. Couldn't you post a podcast which contains the whole performance? I look forward to it; I would be very gladful.

  • Latest podcast is amazing Doc. Love the Clapton/Waters stuff. I wouldn\'t mind a \'solo Rog\' one sometime in the future, akin to the Richard Wright one you did last year. Your favourite studio cuts, rare live stuff, demos etc. all post 1983.

Re: Syd tribute gig. I take it Roger left after his performance then. Shame he didn\'t stay around for Bike. Ah well.
