Show #129 Release date: 28. March, 2009

Just when you thought it couldn't get any better... This is an upgrade to the previous 9. May, 1977 podcast "Look Mommy, there's an aeropig up in the sky" (Show #70 Release date: 13. October, 2006).  As it turns out, it was recorded by Reinhart Holhwein.  Not Bill Graham Productions as previously thought.

Reinhart's recording landed in the lap of a master of mastering, Derek McCabe of 'Mouth of the beast', a group of people who master live recordings, mostly Grateful Dead stuff.  The clarity is much better.

Set 1:
1. Sheep
2. Pigs On The Wing (part 1)
3. Dogs
4. Pigs On The Wing (part 2)
5. Pigs (three different ones)

Set 2:

2. Welcome To The Machine
3. Have A Cigar
4. Wish You Were Here
5. Shine On You Crazy Diamond (6-9)

2. Us And Them
3. Careful With That Axe Eugene

    Thanks once again.

  • All comments about sound quality aside has any body noticed how incredibly HARD the Floyd are rocking?! The are just bashing the place up! It as been so many years since I saw this show in Anaheim that my memory is pretty fuzzy ( for many reasons) but I had forgotten how seriously BAD these guys could be. They were every bit as hardcore as the punkers who derided them. EXCELLENT freakin' jam!

  • ..Well said Michael,i would also like to disagree with that certain Doctors (not our Doc!) comments. The whole point of these Podcasts is that they're basically like a radio show. If you want to hear the Floyd with no talking, buy the bootlegs instead. Personally i love the way that these shows are history lessons as well, the Docs knowledge on individual shows is fascinating to hear,& to write just as a text would be impossible. The Docs love for the Floyd shines out to us all,& the reason we all listen is our own love for this amazing band. Keep up the good work Doc,& in the words of the Floyd,or should that be Stephen Hawkin...Keep Talking...

  • I shouldn't be so eager. The last post SHOULD have read "I think it's good timing you released this, instead of the Gilmour-led Floyd live Iceland show [you were promising]."

I'll also take this moment to thank you for the great "Brew City KAOS" podcast you offered so long ago. It made me appreciate the original KAOS CD even more, though truth be told I've always liked it.

Must be the Floyd. Where did my writing go tonight?

  • Hi Doc
Many Thanks for the Oakland show, nice work everyone.
Fishcado - you're right about wanting to have a time machine - wouldn't it be great to go back with a modern digital recorder and capture ANY Floyd show in pristine sound quality?
Doc, I wonder if I might make a request?
I know you have included part of the Knebworth 1975 show in an earlier podcast, any chance of the complete show?
I'm aware that the original sound quality of the show is poor (I think it was recorded through a wet sock from four miles away), and no better sounding recording has ever emerged in fan circles, but as I went to the show I'd like to hear the whole thing again - I've only ever heard bits and pieces of it. And, as we don't have a time machine, well you're the closest thing we have.
    Cheers
    Tony

  • You do great work. Your archive is magnificent. Thanks for this ongoing work. But I wonder if you would consider talking less during the podcasts? Or even stop talking altogether? Any information about when stuff is recorded could be posted in text. There is no need to hear you. It would be a brilliant to hear your amazing shows without you talking in between some tracks, sometimes at length. Congratulations again on the great work you do!

  • I,for one, would like to state plainly that the person who calls himself Dr Kevin De Ornellas does not speak for me or ( I suspect) many in this listening community.

For me, the Doctor's 'gloss' and the shared stories enrich the listening process immensely.

...but I do have an IDEA that might be of some assistance to Dr Ornellas : the raw material for these shows ( without any kind of interpretive conversation) is available as RoIO's ELSEWHERE.

Dr Ornellas might find a better fit for his tastes ....ELSEWHERE.

I offer this suggestion as the more preferred over his.

  • I think it's good timing you released this, instead of the Gilmour-led Floyd live show. Since the last podcast was "Delicate Sound of Miami", it's a good change of pace to have the original Floyd this week. I must admit, I'm so used to the rougher mix of this Oakland show, that this version is alarmingly... clear!

Thanks as ever. Doc, have you ever heard the 9local Seattle-based) Squirrels' 'Not-So-Bright-Side of the Moon' tribute CD? They cover the whole original 'Dark Side', and their cover of "Great Gig In the Sky" is especially funny. Let me know if you need a copy.

  • So, I woke up at 3:00 a.m. a few nights ago with my iPod still running and headphones on, and I thought I had gone crazy. Turns out I was listening to the last six minutes, such a lovely sound collage. I told my wife that I thought my brain went on the fritz, switching music into car sounds and sirens and voices and weapons and all those interesting clips. But it bugged me a few days until - wham! - it happened again. This time I knew it wasn\'t me, and I managed to figure it out. But just so you know, the whole experience was wholly entertaining. Great show, too, of course!

  • Hi there New Listener,

Welcome to Doc's Definitive Pink Floyd podcast.

That first tune is Roger performing THE FINAL CUT from the Pink Floyd album by the same name, written & intended to be a part of a Waters solo project, however, contractual responsibilities tied Roger to one last Pink Floyd album, hence the title : The Final Cut.

A Great song, and is quintessential Roger Waters.

This is Roger final contributions to The Floyd...........

  • First heard this show in about '86 as "The Abdabs - A Great Set" vinyl boot. A great cover (spot-on spoof of "A Nice Pair"), but not a great sounding release - it was noticeably slowed down. A high school friend of mine remarked, "Gilmour sounds drunk!" Anyway, I appreciate how much work has been done to make such primo versions of this same recording available.
As I recall, in tuning the radio before WYWH at this show Roger stumbled into an ad for The Shane Company, a diamond salesman who's been doing spoken word ads for 30+ years in the Bay Area. (Ft Worth, I think, has a Musak "Killing Me Softly".)
Thanks, Doc! And I'll echo Scott's request for San Diego '71...

  • Wow! that's all I can say. Such clarity especially during the bit between "Have A Cigar" and "Wish You Were Here" where Nick is tuning the radio to the different local stations you can really hear what their saying, and the Guitar work during "Shine on" 6-9 really comes through as well. I have a suggestion for two concerts next time you're lacking inspirado, the soundboard of Dave's Kabuki theater show from his 1984 About Face tour, and Floyd's San Diego show from Oct 1971.

  • Hello Doc
Great show! You truly are a man of your word. I've been following the discussion on Pinkfloydz.com for I go by the screen name "Echoes In Pompeii". The discussion was great, Animals shows seem to be universally regarded as some of the finest shows Floyd put on musically and visually.
It was a unique tour. Animals in its entirely, WYWH in its entierly, inflatables and what not. Great addition of Snowy White who was a friend of Gilmour. It was the last tour that comprised of mostly the main group (David, Rick, Roger, and Nick) with addition of Dick and Snowy. The future tours of Floyd (Wall, ALMOR, Division) had extra musicians.
I really hope Floyd would release another live album like they did with Is There Anybody Out There?
Oink oink, woof woof, baah baah, and cheers
