- Thanks, Mike, I stand corrected - it was 30th March.
I found my old ticket, along with two others - one from December 1974, Manchester Palace, and another from Knebworth 1975; also on the bill were Captain Beefheart, Steve Miller, Roy Harper (guesting on "Have a Cigar" as well as his own set), Linda Lewis (?!) and the show was hosted by John Peel, with help from Graham Chapman, appearing in his role as the colonel from Monty Python.
I was recently very pleased to have found and downloaded an audience recording of the Manchester show I went to - initial listening indicates a surprisingly clear sound, minimal audience noise from the very respectful crowd. I believe this recording known in trading circles as "Manchester Day".
I suppose this provocation means you'll make another pig joke - well, go on, you might even get a rind of applause........oh dear, oh dear..........
- Paul above mentions Stafford Bingley Hall in 1977 - I went to one of the four nights they did there. It was the 10th March if memory serves correctly.
I had my camera confiscated on the way in, they were pretty tight on security - or so I thought until plenty of other cameras were in evidence during the show. However, after the show on the way out, the crowd was tightly bunched and suddenly several outstretched arms appeared above the sea of heads, and grabbed one of the Pink Floyd Animals logo nameboards fixed to the wall. Unable or unwilling to wade into the crowd, the security boys could only watch as the perfectly-synchronized arms pulled the board off the wall, and pushed their way out, their trophy held high in triumph. I could only laugh as it reminded me of the soldier ants at the picnic in Tom & Jerry.
As you say Paul, happy memories. Oh, and I saw Pink Floyd as well..... - Thanks for the Blue Floyd tip, checked 'um out on you tube, they sound good... would see them if they came to the CT area. Doc, I have some bootleg concerts of The Machine, would be happy to send you a few of the better if you like. Drop me an email if your interested.
- OK... I don't know the edict here but some other including the Doc dropped some positive references for The Machine. The Machine is awesome and if they ever come within a reasonable driving distance I would highly recommend seeing them perform. If you would like to get a taste, check out Doc's podcast #46 which include numerous enjoyable PF tribute bands (including The Machine)! Perhaps it's time for another tribute cast? Keep up the excellent work Doc!
- Hi Magenta, Another tribute cast is very possible.
Chris M, the clip you're asking about is from the late 70's sitcom "WKRP In Cincinnati" from the famous "turkey drop" episode. The DJ is Doctor Johnny Fever (my favorite DJ on the show who probably had a lot of influence on me when I was little, to become a DJ) - The Machine is great! Paul... Other than the Oakland gig, specifically 9th of May 77 (which I believe is a soundboard/audience matrix courtesy of Bill Graham) There's another soundboard from the 77 tour. Its was recorded during Floyd's stop in Berlin on 29th Jan, 77... unfortunately the sound is REALLY bad. I believe it was recorded from a side stage soundboard because nothing is mixed properly and very poorly. It sounds like its a monitor mix minus for the band on stage with other elements bleeding in. I've been working on it off and on trying to fix it for several years now and still haven't got it.
My theory for the poor sounding recordings during this time could be a result of the venue size. I'm sure the bulky reel to reel recorders didn't help either as many were probably confiscated from the over zealous security people (1977 was an odd time... lots of "vandalism"). - Gary. If you check out the archives of the Doc you'll find shows from Boston 77, Montreal 77, and Oakland 77, remastered as best that can be done. They are all audience recordings, however the Oakland show is as good as an official release. Doc are there any soundboard recordings out there from the 77 tour?
- Why is it so hard to find a good live recording of the Animals tour? Not knocking Doc's efforts mind you... but I feel like I had better recordings from my bootleg cassettes back in my college years... That said, animals is always a treat, just wish there was a sound board recording out there! Love the site!!
- Great Choice of show Doc.
Never has it sounded so good, Power to the mp3 (no, lets not start that again)
Why is the animals tour so hard to find a good recording (the Olypic Stadium show is an exception in sound quality but gets interupted).
Are there many soundboard recordings?
But alas I fear even a 24/7 show would not be long enough :0)
Another triumph Doc, Give yourself a pat on the back. - oi doc!
