Show #135 Release date: 13. June, 2009

This podcast features not one but two very cool gigs.  The first by request, is David performing at the Mermaid Theatre in 2006.  The other half of the podcast is a unique recording mostly used for the live portion of Ummagumma. • Awesome podcast (as ever). Enjoying it, and loving even the very mention of the re-formed Faith No More! Going to see them at the end of August, can't wait. Doubt if they will be as good as the Ummagumma segment of this podcast though, but still, should be a hoot. Thanks again Doc. Hope the ear is better.

  • Hi Doc. I have for a very long time been a fan here, and my this site has contributed immensely to my personal music journey. As a young lad I bought Beatles singles and albums - with my musichead astounded by hearing Sgt Pepper, which led onto a wider exploration. Kinda mundane and 'innocent' I know, but I was young. The release of Piper came when I was 10 years old, and I nearly broke my little mono portable emi record player playing Interstellar Overdrive again and again. The next releases were bought (by which time I had a better Hi-Fi, in Stereo!!), through Umma Gumma, Atom Heart, Meddle, Obscured, then DSOM - though I missed out More at the time. This preamble is by way of a thanks to you for the Interstellar version on this podcast. It's the first time that I have heard how Floyd, in particular Gilmour and Wright moved on from the earlier post-Syd renditions of Piper tracks, towards the post Umma Gumma work. In particular I can hear the style of some of the tracks from More in this version of Interstellar, with a real ownership of the piece by Gilmour. It is, for me a missing musical link, very personal I know, but, hey, that's what it's about, isn't it! So a big THANK YOU from Devon, UK!!

  • Thanks Doc and all at YC,
Loving it.Imagine all the albums that would have been released differently if LP's had a longer playing format.Often re-releases have the extras as bonus tracks but not in the order they might have been originally thought.Umma live is a peach.
    cheers Keith

  • Hi Doc, greetings from Costa Rica. I've been listening to your podcasts for some time now and they are simply amazing!
Thanks for the chance to finaly hear this unreleased live version of Interstellar Overdrive. I always wanted to hear it since I was told that it was not included in Ummagumma.

  • Origins...????

Doc, is this derivative from the compilation Furry Animal did back in 2004. It sounds identical in the relevant places.

But, an earlier posts mentions that this was "unearthed & released last month" by Yellow Cow Records, so am I just confusing the two releases , or is Yellow Cows work gleaned from Furry Animals.....??

    Just curious....

And by the way, an EXCELLENT podcast.

What a milestone eh Doc?! Good one to celebrate i think..... Cheers again..

  • Yes, YC. Thank you for pointing out my omission. In all fairness I should mention that I did honestly forget to give credit to Yellow Cow as I have in the past with their other material.

  • If Yellow Cow Records hadn't unearthed and released this Ummagumma stuff last month nobody would be listening to it now, so a little credit would have been nice : )

  • This is a real VFM-cast! Both of the featured shows are great but the "alternative Ummagumma" is particulary amazing. Loved the quiet middle section on "Overdrive" - no way could they have gotten away with that in a stadium. Cheers Doc for another home run.

  • Nice twofer Doc. The quality of the Manchester concert quality isnt half bad considering its 40 years old, or is it just the way you Doctored it?Cant get enough of Echoes as it never gets played twice the same.
Who is the end piece played by?

  • Hi everyone,
I'm back after like few months. Was missing you all, specially our Doctor & his great collections.

Listening to track #7 of Mermaid Theater healed my broken heart after the unfair re-election of "the evil monkey" as the president of the beautiful country that I love every inch of it. The news was sad -unfortunately I assume it's gonna be worse sooner or later- & also, how the guards dealt with people, man & woman, was really horrible. You can easily find the whole story on internet.

    Anyways,
Thanks Doc, You brought me back to life,

    Great to be back :)
