Show #75 Release date: 5. January, 2007

This podcast takes care of those who often requested to hear Pink Floyd's free concert staged on a huge barge, moored off the Piazza San Marco, Venice, Italy in front of an estimated crowd of 200,000 people.  The concert was broadcast to over twenty countries and was seen by over 100 million people.

This concert was perhaps one of the more controversial ones for Pink Floyd.  The concert as almost canceled for fear that the vibrations of sound from such an event would damage some of the buildings.  Despite Floyd performing at a lower volume, there was still claims of damage to some buildings and many lamp posts were destroyed from fans climbing on them to get a better look.  Even worse, the city failed to provide the necessary amenities for the fans.  This lead to 300 tons of trash, and human waste being left behind which the Italian Army had to clean up.  The Venice City Council later apologized to the residents and vowed that no similar concert would be allowed again.

The first few songs are included to give you enough time to chill and roll a few good splifs before we dive into the concert portion.

1. David Gilmour - Dominoes [Royal Festival Hall, London, 17, January, 2002]
2. David Gilmour - High Hopes [AOL Sessions, New York City, 6. April 2006]
3. David Gilmour - Fat Old Sun [BBC Radio 2, Johnny Walker Show, 27. September, 2002]

  • i love this concert,i remember sitting there watching it on tv when i was 11 years old! I have a crystal clear version of this concert which i thinks sounds amazing.I think that the version of Yet Another Movie and Another Brick In The Wall are the best yet,Gilmours guitar sounds Fantastic! Its the location that does it for me too, imagine sitting on a gondollar watching Pink Floyd on a floating stage in a city like Venice. Its only Floyd who come up with these amazing ideas!!!FANTASTIC!!!

  • I was lucky to record this concert on video-tape, when it was transmitted. Unfortunately it is a mono-recording (but still HI-FI, anayway) -so this is the first time I hear the concert in stereo.
Compared to other Pink Floyd-concerts available, including PULSE - this is simply the best, I think. With all the errors and everything.
One can see, the band-members are having a great time. They simply love to play the music.
Thank you Doc - the web-site is pure candy.

  • I don't think it's fair to say Nick's drumming sucked. Nick was a very competent drummer. He just wasn't flashy. Watch the Live at Pompeii version of One Of These Days to witness Nick being quite impressive on the drums. Nick gets slagged around unfairly around Floyd fandom circles IMHO. He wasn't a bad musician.

If you're just referring to the sound of this concert though, I agree. But, as I said above, I hate 80's Floyd (with the exception of On The Turning Away).

  • Agreed. He was great in Pompeii. He was featured most of thge time. He gets lazy though. Just watch Pulse. Snore Zzzz.

I think On The Turning Away is underrated.

  • I used to be an obsessed Floyd fan. Still love 'em, but the whole 80's post-Waters era mostly sounds like crap really. Parts of MLOR are nice, but as for the live material, every show sounds exactly the same, each show a carbon caopy of the last, except for maybe a few notes here or there. I wish they had been more spontaneous, and took a few more risks with the setlist. The whole stadium thing got too overblown.

So for that, the Venice show doesn't interest me in the least unfortunately. Maybe years ago, but it's just bla now, just my opinion.

  • Rogers comment after the event was that he had never saw such a bad show. I think AMLOR and TDB were not so good as The Wall and Animals, but his reaction then was just driven bij grudge. Fortunately he has mellowed a bit now. I saw a clip of Run like hell and a lot of enthusiastic Italians and I thought:"Wow! This is great!"

  • Please keep these podcasts comings - especially the live shows. This is the best website I\'ve found all year! OK, I know it\'s 10 January but this has helped me cheer up and forget the advancing years. A show I\'d really be interested in would be one of the Birmingham, England, shows, in December 1974 (can\'t remember which date I went!).

  • I think Dave and Roger were both slightly guilty of having a slight 80\'s sound. Who can blame them. It was the style of the time. Yes Nicks drumming sucks. During the Pulse DVD he looks like he is falling asleep. Roger should have booted him long ago instead of Rick. Nick = overrated and along for the ride.

Alan\'s Psychedelic Breakfast. What the fuck is that shit?

Did anyone else notice a John Lennon feel to Roger\'s sound check? The guitar?

  • Hey Doc,
Thanks for getting that Bravery sound check out on your show. I\'ve had it here for so long and the version that has been floating around out there for the last 15 years plus has become even more distorted than the original. That noise in the background of course is the sound of the rigging work on the stage that afternoon. Anyway sounds nice and crisp and I\'m glad it is out there for people to share and enjoy. You rule as always.
    All best,
    Rob C.

  • hey Doc!

hope you had a great holidays
    thanks for another great podcast

I think that 80\'s LA and cocaine had their effect on Mr Gilmour and what he had to do to keep the Pink Floyd afloat (ouch!)
you just have to listen to On Manhattan Island to hear that he was as much the soul of Pink FLoyd as any other member

here\'s to a year of more fantastic podcast Doc!
    andy

ps - The End, some folks over at AFG might be having the some software glych as yourself, I think there\'s a thread about it (?) maybe you could help them out with what you did to get the podcast d/loaded?

  • Thanks for another great show Doc, the version of Comfortably Numb was one of the best that I've heard and the acoustic version of the Bravery of Being Out of Range was cool.

  • It's great to finally hear this show. Excellent work as usual, Doc!

Am I the only one offended by the sound of Nick's drums on this tour? Reminds me of Def Leppard (no offense, but this is The Floyd!).

Does anyone know if he was playing a regular kit or if they were actually electronic drums? Basically, the snare sounds like a cherry bomb in an echo chamber EVERY TIME IT IS HIT. The WORST kind of 1980's audio production. What do YOU think?

  • Arrghh...this concert is a testament to how Dave pissed all over the Floyd's legacy after Roger left by throwing 80's production all over everything and overcompensating for his absence. Of course, that's just my opinion
