This is something I mentioned in the recent podcast below but thought I post it here too.  About a month ago the powers that be at my radio station, WAAF asked if I could help them with doing a Pink Floyd weekend focusing in on "The Wall".  Finally their resident Floyd DJ is called into action!  I was only asked to provide material but I wasn't involved in the actual programming... unfortunately.

Anyway, that weekend is now upon us and it's a "Walls Of Floyd Weekend" on WAAF.  We're celebrating the 30th anniversary of The Wall, by giving you 30 minute Pink Floyd blocks (get it?) every hour all this weekend!

I'll be on the air Saturday Night from 7pm to 12midnight EST (-5) here in the Eastern New England area on 107.3fm and 97.7fm WAAF.  If you are not local, you can still listen on line here! For when in your local time zone, click here!

It will be a little different from what you hear in my podcasts but it'll be almost as if Brain Damage was back on the radio again before it was a podcast.

If you are in the area, join me and WAAF as we kick off our Pink Floyd weekend with Pink Floyd tribute band, The Machine at Showcase Live on Friday night.  Doors at 6pm, show at 8pm.  Showcase Live is located at Patriot Place, next to Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, MA.

That's not all!  After the show, we'll have a movie screening of "The Wall" in Showcase Cinema Delux right next door at Midnight.  I'll see you there!

  • I am not too thrilled about their version (lips) either, at least at the moment. one of the most important things in regard to the original is missing imo, and that is the flow and the elegance. it's too much chopping up & around things if one can say that. plus, I really have lots of respect for henry rollins, but I believe his spoken parts don't really do anything here...

but well, I certainly will have to listen to it a few more times yet...

    cheers,

  • Anyone have thoughts on The Flaming Lips' take on DSOTM?

From the samples, I think it's kind of a groovy cover album. A lot of traffic over at iTunes is crying 'Desecration!' and the like, but I think it's pretty cool. I hope it becomes available outside of iTunes.

  • Reminds me how I miss my time on the radio 6 years ago - when it was MY time and MY musical choice. The computers have conquered radio, I'm afraid. Why they would request your services and not use them well is bizarre. It's like having a struggling Red Sox '90s team and keeping Nomar Garciaparra, Pedro Martinez and Tom Gordon on the bench. And who would do that? (I'm dating myself.)

  • Hi Doc!
I have an important question. maybe you can help. well it's for me little bit of an personal important thing. the new orleans 1994 version of comfortably numb is described as the best version of Comfortably Numb according to David Gilmour. is this right? do you know more about that question.
mayba you can help. have some beautiful time with your family and friends.

  • Merry Christmas everybody!

Doc, thanks for another year of great podcasts, I look forward to next year. I'd LOOOOOVE a live Syd era show for 2010? I know they are in short supply, and it would have to be Doctored for super sound, but I think it's high time, n'est pas?

  • Hey Doc great show! I only caught the last two hours, but you do an incredible job.

I read above that some Machine fans had posted that I could find shows on their site - but I'm having some trouble. I attended the show here in Pittsburgh in July where they were backed by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. I'd love to find a recording!

  • last night I heard one DJ (the final guy as the thing ended , I think) make reference to the cut he was about to play being "from The Doctor---I wonder what that means (he said)....gotta find out".

    I smiled.

  • The Pink Floyd weekend is now over... It was great meeting so many of you at The Machine's gig! Making announcements on stage was a first time thing for me so it was little nerve wracking but it was fun! The promotions team at the radio station was all on hand and did an amazing job. Having The Machine play live and then seeing The Wall was awesome.

On the radio side of things, I was a little disappointed. It was very strange having no input on the programming... being told what Floyd songs to play. It was like keeping me at the helm but not letting me drive.

The powers mucked it up pretty good. We were celebrating the 30th anniversary release of the STUDIO album of 'The Wall' and not once, the entire weekend, did a cut off the studio album get aired. What??? Instead, specific live cuts were repeated endlessly as if stuck in a vacuum.

It did have its cool moments however. I gave the station a copy of 'The Doctor' (comfortably numb demo) and it was put in heavy rotation. I was surprised. It was cool playing an unreleased/unauthorized track so often... a ballsy move for any commercial station. The listeners loved it because for them, it was new and different. They all wanted to get their hands on it.

I wish I knew about this ahead of time but in addition to Wall material... A good amount of Floyd tracks from other albums were also programmed. It was however very limited. Not even one of Floyd's signature songs, 'Echoes' got aired which would of fit very easily into one of the many 30 minute blocks of Floyd all weekend.

Anyway...before I wrap up my rant, I'd also like to thank the person who loaded the live material into the computer and neglected to apply a simple fade in and out so the audience wouldn't end abruptly. It made every sequay on the air sound like crap. Clearly that person had no clue what they were doing.

All in all, I would of done things differently but on commercial radio, DJ's aren't as important anymore. We are told what to play from mindless computers with 'afraid to think out of the box' programming. I couldn't take it so I jumped out of the box a few times at the risk of losing my job but then again, this is Pink Floyd and I told myself, "I'm gonna own this"!!

  • Hey Doc - Great to finally meet you at and say thanks for all of your effort! Although I missed your first promo for the evening I caught your second one during the intermission... You looked good up there! As you know I'm a BIG Machine supporter and on this night they did not disappoint!! For anyone interested go to www.themachinelive.com and dig around the fan forum as there are links to many machine shows available. Hope you don't mind but I want to recommend another tribute cast of deeper PF cuts for 2010... How else would we get to know the acid drinkers?!?! Best to all during the holidays!

  • Doc, your live show is all that! Enjoying the stream now. Great choices, excellent background info for us diehards as well as casual fans. Have you included that Gilmour "numb" raw demo on the podcast before? You played it in the 11pm block (Not the "magician" one; rather the one that went on to be the song's refrain.)
    thanks!

  • Doctor:
First, let me thank you for being the resource you are. I have gotten a lot of joy listening back to some of these old Floyd shows. As I write I am hearing the audience yell"sit down!"during the spacy section of Echoes. Very "imediate".
Also, I wish that Pink Floyd continues to permit you to podcast as you would like. I get their concern but that is the old model and music is becoming more accessible, not less. Certainly they couldn't mind if you slap links on your site to their merchandising wing.
Thirdly, After taking my 12 year olds to a very successful Green Day show,Their first big rock show, I'm savoring the idea of taking them to Roger Waters' new Wall tour. They've certainly heard me go on about the Wall show I saw.

  • Hey Doc.

Just wanted to say thanks for all the podcasts. The stuff you've got planned for the weekend sounds cool, it's just a shame that its on from about midnight to 5am on a Sunday night here in the UK.

Is there any chance any of it will be featured as/on a podcast later on, or is it a strictly 'listen live only' thing? Either way, hope it all goes well.

    Happy Christmas everyone
